Vol. 2, Issue 11 of the Raven & Quill is up — and this one cuts close.

"The Harlequin's Mask" starts where every honest conversation should: everyone wears one. But in Aithyris, masks aren't social lubricant. They're survival architecture. And the question haunting Chapters 13 and 14 is what happens when the war ends, you reach up to take the helmet off — and there's no latch.

We're inside Cedrik Dawntreader's triple identity crisis, the quiet tragedy of Krysaalis's Court Mask (she didn't put it back on to protect herself — she put it on to protect everyone else from her), and Talathis standing alone at the helm in the fog, trusting the language her body told him instead of the frost in her voice.

Plus a preview of what's waiting ahead. The cages get worse.

If you've ever worn a mask so long you forgot how to take it off — the comments are open.

In Chapter 14, Talathis Dawntreader is alone at the helm of the Sea Wolf, deep in the Vapor Shroud, where the world shrinks to thirty yards of slick decking and black water. The fog has swallowed everything except the silence she left behind — and that's louder than the sea.

But the ocean doesn't let you grieve in peace for long. Before this chapter is done, we're plunging into the cosmology of the Drowned — what really happens to a soul when there's no pyre, no ceremony, no light to follow home. Grief. Islander pragmatism. And the specific horror of a ghost who doesn't know it's a ghost.

This is the newest chapter in Val Saraven's Legend of the Silver Blade — dark, literary fantasy with actual weight to it, set in the world of Aithyris. If you like your high fantasy atmospheric, rigorous, and willing to ask the hard questions, come find us.

How do you balance writing your story with updating World Anvil?

I love using World Anvil as a home for my setting, it helps not to store everything in documents, but lately I’ve struggled to divide my energy between writing, editing, promotion, and building out lore articles.

Most of my focus right now is on the next volume of my epic fantasy saga, especially edits, rewrites, and new scenes. I haven’t posted a proper new World Anvil article in quite a while, some of them are empty for the time being.

That bothers me a little, because I want the world to feel alive outside the books too. I want the histories, cultures, characters, races, and major events to have a place readers can explore.

At the same time, the books themselves have to come first.

For those who both write stories and use World Anvil, how do you keep the balance without feeling like one side is being neglected?

Greetings, fellow writers and creatives.

The latest update is live, bringing us to a profound crossroads in the Saga.

In Raven & Quill #10 ("The Predator’s Rust"), I dive into the behind-the-scenes of Chapter 12. We talk about the "Window of Decay"—a narrative constraint that strips away technical jargon to focus on how the world punishes the body. It is a study in the "Anti-Triumph": Qianna broke her cage, but her evolution has isolated her from the very people she saved.

In Chapter 13 ("The Silent Force"), we pivot to Krysaalis navigating the psychological warfare of the Captain’s Gallery. It is a chapter about the Somatic Debt of masks and the friction of a shandaryn lifespan witnessing human mortality.

I’m curious to hear your thoughts: Did the shift in Qianna’s demeanor catch you off guard, or did you feel the lock snapping?

"Art is born from authentic intent to share a personal truth. The method of delivery is just the mailman."

Raven & Quill Issue #5 In this issue, I’m pulling back the curtain on the Saga of the Silver Blade to show the structural engineering beneath the metastory.

We’ve all been there. You spend forty hours a week pushing the "Sisyphus stone" of the day job—navigating a hamster wheel of UI updates and notifications—only to find that your creative spark is buried under the friction of reality. This week, I stopped running up that hill and started carving through it.

The Feature: Chapter 8 — "Hand of Sorrow"

The latest chapter is now live. Witness the moment Qianna Lockstone stops trying to be Iron (rigid and breakable) and chooses to be the Rust. It’s a dark, visceral ride into the "Architecture of Silence" and the price of survival in the Lorath Forest.

Whether you’re a writer, a worldbuilder, or a "previously blind" visionary finding your sight through new tools, this issue is a manifesto for the Architect in all of us.

Shine Bright,

Welcome to Week 7 of the Saga!

Raven & Quill Issue #7: The Inkwell is live alongside Chapter 5: A Key of Scars. We return to Qianna to peel back the layers of her past.

But the real story this week is about the deep rabbit hole of cartography.

I confess: the map nerd in me took over. I realized the current satellite imagery for Vespria wasn't enough to satisfy the vision. So, instead of just writing, I spent the week rebuilding the Vesprian realms from the ground up in Photoshop to prepare for a massive InDesign overhaul.

Inside Issue #7:

  • The Art of the "Sat-Map": A look at the work-in-progress standard for the new maps.
  • A Jewel Thief in the Night: A warning that the current maps on the site are living on borrowed time. Soon, they will be swapped out silently, with precision.
  • The Inkwell: Learning to sit with the discomfort of "done" while drafting ahead into Chapters 7–9.

The new maps aren't live yet, but you can see the trajectory in the newsletter. Be warned: truth is a shifting horizon.

Happy New Year from the Saga!

We are kicking off 2026 with a fresh start: Raven & Quill, Volume 2, Issue #1 is live alongside Chapter 4: The Rising Tide .

While the plot moves forward at the Rosethorn Estate, the real work this week happened "under the hood" of the world bible. This issue focuses on tuning the engine of the universe to ensure the Saga sings in the right key.

Inside this week's issue:

  • Refining the Resonance: I have standardized the "physics" of the Grand Composition. How does a Sentinel perceive the Song versus a Street Urchin? (And to settle the debate: No, Talathis is not a Cantor).
  • Canonizing Vespria: A deep dive into the history of the Jewel of the West to ensure the casual historical mentions in the prose carry the weight of truth.
  • Shandaryn Aging: Clarifying the mechanics of "Ascension" to explain the dynamic between the Torryaenen Twins.
  • The Family Tree: A status update on the massive project to map the noble houses using InDesign.

I have also "retro-fitted" Chapters 1–3 to match these newly solidified laws of magic and tone. If you are new to the Saga, there has never been a better time to jump in!

Next Week: We leave the politics of Rosethorn and return to the coast of Alfirhavn.
